The Truth About Mini Sessions (From a Calgary Family Photographer Who Actually Does Them)
You’ve probably seen photographers (myself included) announcing “Christmas Minis” or “Mother’s Day Minis” and wondered… what’s the big deal? They’re shorter. They cost less. But are they worth it?
Let’s be honest. As someone who photographs Calgary families, and is also a mom of three, I’ve seen the good, the bad, and the chaos. So here’s the truth about mini session, when they’re a great idea, and when they’re really not.
What Mini Sessions Actually Are
Mini sessions are short, focused photo shoots, usually around 15 minutes, done back-to-back with multiple families on the same day. They’re often themed (like Christmas, Fall, Valentine’s Day, or Motherhood) and set up in one specific location or studio space.
They’re designed to give you a small collection of edited images without committing to a full session.
I offer them in Calgary a few times a year because they’re a great way to get beautiful, professional photos without spending an hour wrangling kids (or husbands).
When Mini Sessions Are Worth It
Mini sessions can be an amazing option when:
You want updated photos for cards or gifts.
Your kids are little and have short attention spans.
You’ve done a full session with me before and just want a quick refresh.
You’re on a budget but still want professional quality photos.
They’re also a good fit if you like having the structure of a short session. Some families thrive under a little time pressure (less time for the kids to get bored or start rolling in the grass).
In short: minis are amazing for families who love the experience of photos but don’t need a full storytelling session every time.
When Mini Sessions Aren’t the Right Fit
Here’s where I’ll be blunt. Minis aren’t magic. They’re not the right choice if you:
Want lots of variety or outfit changes.
Have multiple young kids who take a while to warm up.
Want a slower, more candid experience with time to explore.
Mini sessions move fast. There’s usually a family right before you and right after you. There’s no time to ease slowly or take breaks as we jump right into shooting.
If your goal its to capture a full story, real connection, and a mix of candid and posed shots, then a full family session is 100% worth the investment. Minis just aren’t built for that kind of depth.
What To Expect From My Mini Sessions
Even though they’re short, I keep things relaxed. You won’t have to worry about awkward posing or facing smiles. I guide you through simple, natural prompts so you can just focus on being together.
You’ll walk away with a handful of photos that feel real. Full of personality, connection and that little spark that makes a family uniquely yours.
One of my favourite messages from a client after a mini session said:
“I am in love with the mini shoot I had with Shanlee! She delivered some amazing shots of me and my son, and I’m so grateful!!”
That’s the goal. Short and sweet, but still meaningful.
So… Are Mini Sessions Worth It?
Honestly, yes. If you know what you’re signing up for.
They’re not meant to replace full sessions. They’re meant to make it easy for families to get updated, beautiful photos without the stress, time, or cost of a longer shoot.
If you want to capture a specific season, like Christmas magic or those fleeting fall colours, minis are perfect.
If you’re ready for something slower, more personal, or documentary-style, then a full session is the better choice.
Either way, the best session is the one that fits your family right now. And if that’s a short, sweet, laughter filled 15 minutes where your kids run wild in front of the camera, I’d call that a win.
If you’re in the Calgary area and want to grab one of my upcoming mini sessions, keep an eye out! I only do them a few times a year.
