Calgary is an incredibly beautiful city to raise a family in - and it's equally beautiful to photograph on in. With river valley, open prairies, and golden rolling hills, there's no shortage of backdrops that make for stunning, meaningful family photos.

Here are some of my favourite sports in and around Calgary for family sessions.

Shannon Terrace


Shannon Terrace is simply beautiful. It's one of those spots that feels tucked away and a little magical, especially during golden hour when the light filters through just right. If you're hoping for that warm, glowy look in your photos, this is the spot. It photographs beautifully in spring, summer and fall and has a timeless quality that I really love.

Quarry Lake - Canmore


If you're willing to make the drive, Quarry Lake in Canmore is absolutely breathtaking. Nestled in the mountains with stunning rocky peaks reflected in the water, it's unlike anything you'll find in Calgary. I've shot out here before and the backdrop is just incredible - the kind that makes every photo feel cinematic.


Because it's outside of Calgary, travel fees do apply, which I know can make people hesitate. But if you've ever wanted mountain photos without a full destination trip, it's genuinely worth it. I've also been toying with the ideas of offering mountain mini sessions out here if there's enough interest - so if that's something you'd love, feel free to reach out and let me know!

Silver Springs Ridge


Silver Springs Ridge is one of Calgary's hidden gems. Perched above a valley with sweeping views and dramatic cliffs, it has a grandeur that's hard to find within the city. I've shot sessions here and it never disappoints - spring, summer, and fall look gorgeous, with the valley backdrop adding real depth and interest to every photo. It's one of those locations that feels elevated (literally and figuratively) without having to leave Calgary.

Bowness Park


Bowness Park is one of my all-time favourite locations for family sessions. With the river nearby, open grassy areas, and gorgeous tree cover, it offers so much variety within one location. Families can move naturally through the space - kids can run, explore, and just be themselves - while I capture what unfolds. The mix of light through the trees and open sky makes it a dream to shoot in, especially around golden hour.


One thing to keep in mind - Bowness gets busy, especially in summer. The good news is there are quieter pockets within the park that are easy to find once you know where to look, and I always do. Parking can be tricky on busy days though, so I'd recommend arriving early to snag a spot.

Big Hill Springs Provincial Park


Just a short drive outside of Calgary, Big Hill Springs offers something a little different - rolling hills, lush trees, and a more dramatic landscape than you'll find within the city. It's a great option for families who want something a bit more adventurous or rugged feeling. While I haven't yet had the chance to shoot a full family session here, it's absolutely on my radar and I think it would be stunning.

Fish Creek Park


Fish Creek Provincial Park is the largest urban park in Canada, and it shows. The southwest end in particular has a wide open, prairie-like feel with a couple of cute bridges - think tall grasses, big skies, and that wide open Alberta landscape. It's a spot I'm still getting to know, which honestly makes it exciting - there's so much of it to explore and I know there are some incredible pockets in there waiting to be found.

Nose Hill Park


Nose Hill Park sits right within the city but feels like you've been transported to the open prairies. High grass, sweeping views, and wide open sky make it unlike anywhere else in Calgary. It's a unique, underrated location that I'd love to explore for sessions - the natural, wild feel would suit families who want something a little  different from the typical park setting.

A Note on Locations


One of the things I love most about shooting in Calgary is that the best location is often wherever you feel most at home. Whether that's one of the spots above, your favourite neighbourhood park, or even your own backyard - the comfort and ease you feel in a space always translates into better, more natural photos.
